Are AED's safe to use?

AED defibrillators are failsafe and have built in security to protect against misuse. Even when applied to a patient not in need of treatment they cannot deliver shocks and are entirely safe to use and operate.

Why have an AED?

For each minute after a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) the chance of survival decreases by 10% for each minute that passes without defibrillation being given, even if good Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is performed. Defibrillation is the electric shock given by an AED which is the only known treatment which stops the life threatening Ventricular Fibrillation and tachycardia heart rhythms which will lead to death if not terminated.

How does it increase survival?

Historical data has shown that less than 7% of people suffering a SCA survive. By contracts in areas which have experienced widespread deployment of AED,s and First responders to use them e.g. in Leisure areas (like Shopping centres and Casino's), Airports, Community schemes, police cars survival rates can be as high as 70-80%.Every year thousands of people die in the UK from Cardiac Arrest that otherwise may have survived if they had received immediate treatment using an Automated External Defibrilator.
